Service through Education: a Core Competency
Katharine Sharp Review [ISSN 1083-5261] No. 6, Winter 1998 [http://edfu.lis.uiuc.edu/review/6/estrin_inst.pdf] SR The promise of libraries to educate the citizenry has long been a purpose of the library as an institution. Instruction occurs in public, academic, and special libraries and is manifested in many ways beyond the traditional classroom environment. This article suggests that instructi...
متن کاملPromoting Scientific Research Culture in Youth through Empirical Inculcation
Background: Empirical inculcation is vital for producing quality research professionals and upon realizing the increasing demand of emerging scientific research professionals, National Academy of Young Scientist (NAYS) launched its science for youth (S4Y) program in Pakistan with its emphasis on empiricism. Methods: S4Y team was galvanized to undertake this task and different scientific activ...
متن کاملScientific rigor through videogames.
Hypothesis-driven experimentation - the scientific method - can be subverted by fraud, irreproducibility, and lack of rigorous predictive tests. A robust solution to these problems may be the 'massive open laboratory' model, recently embodied in the internet-scale videogame EteRNA. Deploying similar platforms throughout biology could enforce the scientific method more broadly.
متن کاملThe Evolution of Fun: Automatic Level Design Through Challenge Modeling
A generative system that creates levels for 2D platformer games is presented. The creation process is driven by generic models of challenge-based fun which are derived from existing theories of game design. These models are used as fitness functions in a genetic algorithm to produce new levels that maximize the amount of player fun, and the results are compared with existing levels from the cla...
متن کاملMaking Racing Fun Through Player Modeling and Track Evolution
This paper addresses the problem of automatically constructing tracks tailor-made to maximize the enjoyment of individual players in a simple car racing game. To this end, some approaches to player modeling are investigated, and a method of using evolutionary algorithms to construct racing tracks is presented. A simple player-dependent metric of entertainment is proposed and used as the fitness...
